Iota Gamma returns from Convention!

Four gentlemen from Iota Gamma returned home yesterday from a 5-day trip to Austin, TX for this year’s Pi Kappa Alpha International Convention. President Bill Hayward, Internal VP Andi Diediker, Recruitment Chairman Paul Knutson, and Recruitment Chairman Nate Summerfield represented the chapter and returned with many accolades. Iota Gamma was recognized as being in the Top 20% of the 215 Pike chapters in the United States and Canada with its receipt of the Raymond L. Orians Chapter Excellence Award. In addition, Iota Gamma was 1 of 3 finalists for the Athletics programming award. Although this past year was very successful, members are already excited for the coming year and furthering last year’s achievements.

In addition to the chapter being recognized at the convention, Iota Gamma attendee Nate Summerfield was selected to Pi Kappa Alpha’s prestigious Supreme Council. The Supreme Council is composed of seven total members, two of which are voting undergraduate members. Undergraduate members of the council are provided with all-expense paid travel to four meetings over their year term. The Supreme Council members focus on the vision for our Fraternity over the long term and serve as role models in living the values of the Fraternity. Congratulations Nate for your achievement

Pikes Win 8th Intramural Championship in 10 Years!

The Iota Gamma chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha won the all-campus intramural championship this year for the 8th time in 10 years! It was a blowout victory, winning by an overwhelming 2,715 points.

Golf Tournament Raises $5,100

The 6th Annual Dr. Kent Estes Memorial Golf Tournament raised $5100 for UNK scholarships this year. Thanks to all of those that played in the tournament or donated to the Dr. Kent Estes Scholarship Fund. We hope to see everyone back next year for another great tournament!

Busy Week for Iota Gamma

The past week was a busy one for the Iota Gamma chapter. It began on Thursday April 22nd where several Pikes worked security for the Kellie Pickler concert that was hosted in the UNK Health and Sports Center. After the concert the members stayed around to help tear down the stage. They were able to meet Kellie Pickler and took a picture with her holding an "I Heart Pi K A Shirt" which were sold to help support the Kent Estes Memorial Golf Tournament.

The week continued on Saturday, April 24th with the Kent Estes Memorial Golf Tournament. Junior Luke Gentrup planned the event and did an excellent job. The tournament and Black Tie see a large amount of alumni come back and it is always great to catch-up with them. The only problem the tournament faced was the weather as it began to pour down rain near the end, but the players were able to finish their rounds. The winning team consisted of: Senior Josh Jensen, Sophomore Beau Beckwith, and Alumni Craig Zegers and Ben Allemann. The group shot a 55.

After the golf tournament was Black Tie which was planned by Senior Ben Schleiger. After working hard on the golf tournament all day we relaxed and had a good time! The event began with a dinner and award ceremony hosted at the Holiday Inn followed by a dance shortly after. Special thanks has to go out to the Younes family who has always been kind and helped us with our events. There were nine awards given out at Black Tie that were previously voted upon by the chapter, and are listed below.

Former Chapter Advisor Craig Johring came back for the event from Mexico City. He awarded Senior Eric Hinze with the Johring Award that was previously given to the chapter but had not been handed out in a couple of years. It goes to a member of the house who has shown exceptional leadership quality. Hinze received an 1865 sabre, the sword thought to be carried by the Founders and is a key piece in our shield.

The next night, Sunday, April 25th, the chapter went through Executive Board Transitions and Alumni Charge. All executive positions except for the President went through voting and had new members. The executive board also had some minor changes including merging the Corresponding and Recording Secretaries into one position and adding Member Development as an exec position. Following the Executive Board Transitions the chapter went through Alumni Charge. At least point we recognized 11 members who have contributed to the house and are leaving the chapter. They will be missed within the walls of the chapter but will always be members of Pi Kappa Alpha!

It was a busy week where many alumni came back for the golf tournament and Black Tie, many members went alumni, and a new executive board took over the house. Not to mention Kellie Pickler holding a shirt saying she loves Pike!

Greek Week 2010

The 2010 Greek Week took place from Monday April 12th to Thursday April 15th. Iota Gamma was paired with Alpha Omicron Pi, Alpha Tau Omega, and Sigma Lambda Beta and the team had many successes throughout the week.

The first event was the All Greek Fashion Show on Monday. The Fashion Show involved each Greek organization, picking one member to represent them in a fashion show. Freshman Tommy Erhart modeled for Pike with a Michael Jackson theme. Although a classic performance by Tommy and his partner Shayla Sylvester - they were unable to crack the top 3.

The next event was the Derby Race on Tuesday.The race required each team to make a derby push car and a go three laps around a track: one lap where two girls push a guy driver, one lap where two guys push a girl driver, and the last lap is the team's choice. Thanks to the construction work of sophomores Marshall Milanuk and Kevin Kalkowski and many other Pikes, "The Blur" was able to roll to a first place finish!

The next event was the Step-Competition on Wednesday. The step-competition involved each team preparing a step routine that was then scored by judges. The scoring is based on: originiality, creativity, difficulty, and appearance. The Pike members consisted of: Junior Paul Knuston, Sophomores Adam Couture and Jacob Navrkal, and Freshmen Anthony Chavez, Brandon Sklenar and David Caskey. The Pike team was able to gangster dance their way to a first place finish!

The week came to a close with the final day of events on Thursday. The first event of the day was the Championship Powderpuff Football Game. It was a match-up between the defending champion AOIIs (who received a bye into the championship game) vs. the Gamma Phis (who won a semi-final game against the Alpha Phis to advance to the championship game). The AOIIs came out fast and took a huge lead early in the game. The G-phis attempted a comeback late in the game but it was not enough. The AOIIs defended their title and won the game!

The next event was a Water Balloon Throw. Each Greek organization had five of its members throw a water balloon three times, with the longest throw winning. Sophomore Heath Erwin was the longest thrower for Pike, but finished second overall.

After the Water Balloon Throw came the Tug-of-War Competition. The Pike team consisted of: Senior Brian McDonald, Junior Jake Wardyn and Freshmen Andrew Roberts, Dan Anderson, and Tyler Brown. Pike faced off against the Sig Eps and quickly finished the round. The Sig Eps then lost to the Delts who advanced to the championship vs. the Pikes. Again, the Pikes tugged hard and finished the round quickly, winning the Tug-of-War Championship!

The final event of Greek Week was an egg toss. Each member of a fraternity was paired with a member of a sorority and had to pass an egg back and forth, taking a step back after each throw. The Pike members consisted of: Sophomores Heath Erwin and Tyler Lee and Freshman Andi Diediker. The teams couldn't take care of the gentle eggs that afternoon and failed to win the event.

The Pike team finished first in the Derby Race, Step-Competition, Powderpuff Football, and Tug-of-War and finished second in the Water Balloon Throw. Overall the Pike team finished second by a close 61 points!

Pikes Inaugurated into Student Government

We are a little less than 2 weeks away from our 6th Annual Kent Estes Memorial Golf Tournament and the tournament is officially full. We have received 36 teams and unfortunately this is the maximum number allowed on the course. However, if you weren't able to sign-up as one of the first 36, you can still submit your team online and get put on a waiting list. If a team were to drop from the tournament, we'd go to the waiting list for replacement teams. Thanks everyone for their understanding and we're looking forward to another successful tournament!

2010 Firemen's BBQ

On Sunday, March 28th from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. the men of The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity will be hosting a Firemen's BBQ at the Harmon Park Activity Center.

A few gentlemen from the chapter will rise early on Sunday morning and smoke pork for the event. Various sides will complement the pulled pork sandwiches, including baked beans, coleslaw, etc...

Tickets for the BBQ are $5 per person and a limited number will be available.

All proceeds will go to the Kearney Volunteer Fire Deparment. The department plans on using the funds to purchase a mobile educational training module that will be used to educate the community and also local schools on fire safety.

We hope that you'll be able to attend this event as a good time is guaranteed to be had by all.

Pikes Working Hard Again at World Theatre

6th Annual Kent Estes Memorial Golf Tournament

The men of Pi Kappa Alpha would like to cordially invite you to participate in the 6th Annual Dr. Kent Estes Memorial Golf Tournament. The tournament will take place at Kearney Country Club Golf Course on Saturday April 24, 2010.

The entry fee for the tournament will be $80.00 per person to play. This payment will include 18 holes of golf, cart rental, and a meal to follow the tournament. The deadline for entries is April 11th. The format of play will be a four man scramble with a shotgun start. The tournament will start at 9:00 a.m. on April 24th at the Kearney Country Club Golf Course. Check–in will start at 8:00a.m. All proceeds for the golf tournament will go to the Dr. Kent Estes Memorial Scholarship Foundation.

There will be prizes awarded to the first, second, and last place teams. During the tournament there will also be chances to win many pin prizes. Entry fees need to be paid to The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, and sent to Luke Gentrup by April 11th. Also, if you have any questions please contact Luke Gentrup.
